About Us

In the Maldives, the issue of housing has long been a significant social concern, impacting the lives of countless Maldivians residing in the greater Male region. Regardless of their field of study or occupation, a vast majority of individuals in this area have experienced the burdensome consequences of what is commonly referred to as "rent slavery." Recognizing the gravity of this situation, the Commoners Friendship Association emerged as a dedicated organization addressing the challenges faced by Maldivian commoners. Comprised of three major committees—National, Housing, and Youth—the association has made remarkable strides in its endeavors, with the housing committee currently serving as its most active platform. The core focus of the Commoners Friendship Association lies in advocating for the housing rights of commoners and tirelessly lobbying for improved social and council housing policies in the Maldives. One noteworthy initiative undertaken by the association is its unwavering commitment to the Hiya flat project—an effort aimed at safeguarding the rights of flat owners. Through relentless dedication, the team has succeeded in establishing a vibrant community platform on Viber, boasting a membership of over 7,000 Hiya flat residents. Recognizing that the condition of housing serves as the foundation for numerous social issues in the Maldives, the Commoners Friendship Association remains steadfast in its commitment to fighting for the housing rights of commoners as its primary task. With an unwavering belief in the transformative power of secure and affordable housing, the association continues to work diligently, ensuring a better future for all Maldivians.

Our Story

In the bustling city of Male', a group of young and spirited friends found solace in their regular gatherings over coffee. They hailed from diverse professional backgrounds—journalists, civil servants, and private sector employees—but they shared a common plight. Each of them had experienced the suffocating grip of rent slavery in the Maldives. Tired of merely commiserating about their shared struggles, they yearned to bring about positive change in their beloved nation. As the steam rose from their cups, they embarked on heartfelt discussions, delving into the pressing issues plaguing Maldivian society. Their conversations were rich with passion and their ideas flowed freely, nurtured by a collective desire to confront the root cause of many societal challenges—the deplorable state of housing in the greater Male' region. Inspired by their shared experiences and driven by a sense of responsibility as Maldivian citizens, they resolved to take action. Thus, the Commoners Friendship Association was born—a testament to the frustration, inspiration, and vision that united this group of friends. Despite their different professional paths, they were bound together by a common goal: to address the dire housing conditions that inflicted untold hardships upon countless individuals. With their backgrounds as journalists, entrepreneurs, civil servants, and freelance workers, they knew they possessed the diverse skills and knowledge required to effect change. They embraced their roles as catalysts for transformation, pooling their talents and resources to tackle the housing crisis head-on. Their friendship became the foundation upon which their collective efforts would flourish. The association became a beacon of hope, radiating the belief that ordinary citizens possessed the power to reshape their society. Their message resonated with others who had suffered silently, victims of the same housing struggles. As word spread, more individuals joined their cause, reinforcing their determination and amplifying their impact. Together, they embarked on a journey that transcended personal interests and ambitions. They organized community forums, engaging with residents affected by housing issues, and listened intently to their stories, documenting the hardships they endured. Armed with firsthand accounts, they approached policymakers, advocating tirelessly for improved social and council housing policies. Their voices grew louder and more influential, demanding justice for all Maldivians. The Commoners Friendship Association became a symbol of unity and resilience. Their story spread far and wide, inspiring other communities facing similar challenges to band together and demand change. The association's endeavors not only aimed at providing secure and affordable housing but also aimed to address the underlying societal issues exacerbated by this crisis. The journey of the Commoners Friendship Association continues, its members undeterred by obstacles that lie ahead. Their story is a testament to the remarkable power of friendship, empathy, and collective action. As they work diligently to transform their society, their vision remains unwavering: to create a Maldives where no citizen is shackled by rent slavery, where housing is a fundamental right, and where the collective efforts of passionate individuals can shape a brighter future for all.
